Waterfall of the Week

Singing Falls

Singing Falls is roadside in Carter County, Kentucky. Across the street is an old building that says Fort Falls on it. I don’t know where that name came from, but that is what this waterfall was called for years.

Part of my research when I first heard about this waterfall was looking up old photos in the Library of Congress and at the universities in Kentucky. I came across an old photo, which is the one used above for this article, that shows a family or a gathering of people at the base of what is labeled on the photo as Singing Falls. Singing is commonly a name tied to waterfalls because they make noise. They’re loud. I’m guessing this waterfall was given that name due to people gathering in the area just outside of Carter Caves State Resort Park, as well as having this building and business across the street. You could drive down the road with your windows down, or in the early days with a Model T or some other open vehicle, and you would just hear the waterfall and stop.

You can pull over right there on the side of the road and look at this nice waterfall that plunges over the ledge. If you’re visiting Carter Caves State Resort Park, I would recommend stopping here on your way to the park, as this waterfall is worth you at least hopping out and viewing before continuing on.
